A Hole in Your Soul ?
To be 'regenerated' is to be, by the power of God, spiritually 'born-again, 'born from above', a new creation, converted
from the old and renewed in Jesus Christ.
(1)   Rebirth emphasizes the sovereign role of God in bringing about the
experience of regeneration'.
(2)   It is the 'spirit man' that is reborn, while the 'man of the soul' remains to be brought into
perfection by the Truth of God's Word. It is helpful here to recognize that man is a "living soul"(being)
(3)  and is composed
of soul, body and spirit which are in a unity.  However, all three parts of man's being
do not mature at the same rate and
can at times be at odds with one another. "Regeneration" is the work of the Holy Spirit.  Scripture
(4)  and human experience
clearly reflect that people lack the power and will to voluntarily reform (irrespective of what numerous "self-help"
television ministries and recent publications venture to proclaim). The Holy Spirit 'tools'(chisels) upon the human
disposition by the use of truth
(5). This truth is the message of salvation which we find in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  A
primary role of the Holy Spirit is to take this truth and commend it to the understanding of each hearer
(6).  Regeneration
occurs when the Holy Spirit takes the truth of the gospel message and convicts the individual both to understand it and to
commit oneself to it. There is a divine initiative through the Holy Spirit. There is a human responsibility in the response to
the Spirit's urging."
(7) These basic principles of Christianity seem elemental, yet we do not hear an abundance of such
preaching in the 20-21st C. Church.
The expression to 'save one's soul(8)  would sound as if the 'soul' is a separate entity and can be divided from the unity of
the body and spirit. "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to
dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
(9)  The word of God here
meaning His inspired Word, the Scriptures.  It has the power to reach to the inmost parts of one's personality and to judge
the innermost thoughts, soul and spirit. The meaning here is the Word pierces to the depths of soul and spirit,
not between
the two; they stand for the innermost facets of our immaterial nature, just as joints and marrow the material aspect. Both
soul and spirit can be involved in what pleases or displeases God."
(10)   Unrepentant sin, unforgiveness towards the actions
of others, anger without reconciliation .. resentment .. envy .. jealously .. prejudice .. wrongful accusations .. malice, etc.,
are all caustic and erosive to the soul (and spirit) and spiritually can leave gaping 'holes' in one's inner most parts. Yea for
we are "... the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe:".
(11)   Yet that
'righteousness of God' can drain out through
holes in our soul if our faith in Jesus Christ is abridged though unbelief, loss
of trust in His Word, denial of His promises, unrighteous living and thinking, and/or reliance on 'religious practices' to
replace a contrite and repentant heart.
Much of man's preoccupation today seems to be directed towards discovery of 'secrets' which can prolong health and
longevity and increase ones prosperity, while allowing the destiny of his soul to be left to the fortuity of tomorrow.  "Do
not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul
and body in hell."
(12)   "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a
man give in exchange for his soul?"
(13)   If we spent as much time guarding our 'soul' as we do standing in front of the
vanity mirror or expended in prayer the same amount of energy we exert in pursing our leisure activities, then the
who "can destroy both soul and body in hell" would be on the flee(15)  rather than attacking our lee (protected shelter of the
Holy Spirit). The strongholds we allow to be erected in our life are ostensibly of our own doing, or undoing. Today is the
day to renew our quest to become an instrument God can use in 'soul mending' ministries throughout the body-of-Christ.
We see prominent figures on, e.g.,  television with souls leaking righteousness as a result of abridged faith and unholy
alliances. God has made a way for us in times such as these, "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and
secure ... Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever ..."
(16)   Souls can be
healed today, tomorrow may never come for some who remain 'unmended' and without hope of salvation.  Be one of
God's soul mending helpers, today! ... there was a time when someone(s) came and help mend your pierced and
hole-riddled soul!  Amen
