It has shown that traditional family planning is no longer acceptable in modern times and research has been undertaken to identify these different forms of family planning.

The research was undertaken in the Mangochi district, which is the third most populous area of Malawi. In this district around 60 Focus Group discussions were held to identify the different attitudes and views of thirty male and thirty female participants regarding various forms of family planning techniques. The focus groups were conducted during a particular period of time when the traditional method of family planning was considered the best. This is the time when the government had introduced the concept of family planning in the community, allowing family planning to be practiced by each family according to their own requirements.

Modern Family Planning

The results were very interesting as many of the traditional practices, especially regarding fertility and sexual matters, were being abandoned in the face of new family planning programs. The traditional belief in various types of natural family planning practices is now no more accepted and is not practiced at all. Instead of adopting the traditional methods of family planning, many families are now adopting the more modern approaches such as contraceptive implants containing Follistim and intrauterine insemination. All these methods of family planning are now known to have reduced fertility and increase the chances of conceiving a child.

Many of the older members of the community were also reluctant to use these techniques, even though they could tell that their children were not getting enough food. Many of the parents did not want their children to be born in a world where there are so many people around who could take advantage of their lack of food. They were concerned that they would lose their prestige if their children did not reproduce enough to provide for their families. However, many of the women in the focus groups who were able to successfully use the modern contraceptives were very happy with the way that they had been treated by their husbands had treated them.

Traditional Family Planning

However, the traditional family planning practices of the Mangochi district were quite varied and included the use of medicinal herbs which are not used anymore to enhance fertility and are still used to prevent conception. It was found that these traditional procedures often involved having more than one person taking the medicine in order to prevent fertilization.

With the advent of modern contraceptive techniques, many traditional techniques, including those involving the use of herbal and medicinal herbs have become largely obsolete and it has been seen that there is little or no use for them. As people have become educated about the effects of natural methods of family planning, more people are switching over to the more modern methods, which in most cases is the contraceptive implant.

The research has shown that most people, both males and females, do not want to undergo family planning procedures, even if it means that they will not be able to conceive a child. Even those who do not want to have a child would prefer to have a child anyway, but only after considering the fact that they would not be able to bear another child because of their age.

This study has provided much information on the various types of family planning techniques and it is likely that more research will be undertaken in order to determine the differences in the views of the various cultures. There may be a need to reevaluate the traditional methods of family planning to reflect the fact that the more modernized methods of family planning actually do offer some advantages.
